Adam and the ants

From UK

Listed under : Punk 1976-1980

Terry Smith : Ants 77-80, pre-'Kings of the wild frontier' were disbanded shortly before fame and fortune beckoned. The clever tongue-in-cheek lyrics with references to bondage and S&M gave rise to the 'Antmusic for Sexpeople' slogan. Their album: 'Dirk Wears White Sox' (1979) was and still is highly underrated and still worth checking out. Stand out singles from this era: 'Lady', 'Xerox' and 'Deutcher Girls'. Film: Jubilee (1977) featured them playing live and a very young Adam playing 'Kid'. Bootleg vinyl: 'Madam Stan' - a very early collection with some hilarious (but deadly serious) lyrics... 'b-b-b-baby you... smell'. The later and more famous Ants re-recorded older tracks on their B-sides, but didn't quite capture the energy. Bow Wow Wow and Monochrome Set were formed from the remnants of this band, and rumour has it that told punk Fagin, Malcolm McLaren paid Adam Ant a bit of dosh to use the newer Ants style with Bow Wow Wow - with some limited success.
