Orville Lee : 1 The Beatles 1961-1970
There are many other compilations and releases but these cover British studio releases. Some of the US releases were nearly identical to one another, often times only varying by one or two songs.
The Beatles are the greatest band because they were and still are the most relevant band of the rock era. There story has been told so many times its folklore now. They started as kids, built a fan base, got popular in Europe, conquered America soon after with an appearance on Ed Sullivan, expanded their musical horizon (with the help of drugs) outside parties got involved, band fights, band breaks up. Simple as that. They would all move on to distinguished solo careers, some better than others with Lennon leading the way until he was murdered in 1980 with the world still mourning. Paul would become a pop force solo and with Wings having hit after hit gradually settling in his role of elder statesman losing his soul mate Linda in the late 90s. George would start off strong with All Things Must Pass but would release inferior records for most of his remaining career passing on in 2001. Ringo would later do TV and create the All Star Band. There have been mishaps along the way with McCartney loosing the Beatles catalogue to Michael Jackson and the ongoing battle with Yoko Ono over royalties but that cannot tarnish their aura. With posthumous releases live at the BBC, the Anthology 1,2,3 (1-2 would have new so-called Beatle songs recorded from Lennon demos) and The Beatles 1 which would sell millions. The Beatles have become a part of pop-culture and are the true archetype from which today's bands still follow. Cesar : By the time The Beatles started making albums, rock and roll had reached a dead end. With the main rock artists of the 50s gone or on hiatus, nothing exciting or original was happening in the rock scene. I mean, have you ever heard Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka or Pat Boone? If you have, you'll understand what I`m saying, rock and roll was about to die. The Beatles, with their fresh and original ideas and, by the mid 60s, with the way they erased the limits of rock music by combining it with elements and instruments from other kinds of music, gave a big second birth to rock music and they laid the foundations for basically everything that was about to follow. So Elvis might have been the king of the rock and roll of the 50s (or Chuck Berry, for that matter), but The Beatles are the kings of all the rock music that has been made since the 60s. Andrew : The Beatles led the Northern sound in Britain then the British Invasion in America. The Beatles started the classic rock era are instrumental in leading many folk artists into rock music. The group were at the forefront or help popularize such things as folk rock, raga rock, progressive rock, power pop and others. The Beatles helped the rock group to be bigger than the solo act and leading the album to be bigger than the single. Vote for this artist/group, current rating is : 2.61 Listed albums for Beatles
