Rea, Chris

From

Listed under : Blues 1981-1990

Mike Boardman: Contrary to popular misconception, Chris Rea is NOT a Geordie! He is from Middlesbrough and was brought up as part of the family ice-cream business. His early recordings were made on the Magnet record label (it is unconfirmed whether the name of the record label was derived from a notoriously rough pub in the Boro!) His early albums included the wonderful "Whatever Happened to Benny Santini?" and "Tennis".

Most memorable quote for me was during a small gig in the Coatham Bowl in Redcar in about 1983/4 when a yet unestablished Rea said to the audience before playing one of his standards "If this next song had been as popular in this country as it was in Germany, I'd be playing at the Newcastle City Hall tonight rather than the Bowl"
