Dave Clark Five

From London UK

Listed under : Pop Rock-1970

Michael Ordovensky : Dave Clark was the name of the drummer. Michael Smith was the lead vocalist. Rivaled the Beatles in popularity for several months in 1964-65. Sonny Bono, of Sonny and Cher wrote one of their hits "Needles & Pins".

Paul D'Angelo : Such a different sound with the sax and the organ and the drum style. I saw them in Boston in 1966 and they were terrific. Mike Smith's voice was tremendous and their harmonies were flawless.

I was never a DC 5 fan until I saw them in concert at the Boston Garden in 1966. I thought they were fantastic. Terrific sound, real tight harmonies and very effective drumming by Dave Clark especially when he did a solo on a group of tom-toms. Mike Smith's voice was incredible. I knew then why they called him the "Boomer." The other performers were the Rascals, Lou Christie and a couple of local groups. The DC 5 blew everybody away. After seeing them I was impressed and became a fan. Why this group is not in the Hall is something I don't get.

Many people knock them because they covered a lot of songs, but they were one of the few bands where their covers were in many instances better than the originals. Their version of "Reelin' and Rockin" is tremendous. Although they're known for their hard-rocking songs, many of their ballads are outstanding.

They were really underrated and also so different from the other British Invasion groups with the sax and the organ and the limited guitar, although people in the know state that Lenny Davidson was a more than adequate guitarist and musician.

I really don't understand why they are not in the Hall.

Rick Steves : Sonny Bono did, in fact, co-write "Needles and Pins." The song, however, was a hit for the Liverpool band, The Searchers, not The Dave Clark Five. Mike Smith was also the organist for DC5. The other members of the band were Rick Huxley (bass), Lenny Davidson (guitar), and Dennis Payton (saxophone).

DC5 had many hits, including "Glad All Over", "Bits and Pieces", "I Like it Like That", and what I think is one of the most beautiful ballads of all time, and of all genres of music, "Because".

jack smith jr : I always enjoyed the DC5's albums which contained quality songs and many surprises. In 1967, I saw them in concert in Cleveland. Wow! they played great and everyone really enjoyed their music. These guys certainly deserve to be in the hall. Mike Smith was among the best vocalists of his time. He had a tragic accident a couple of years ago and suffered a spinal injury. My prayers are with Mike and his family.

paul kriedeman : The Dave Clark 5 toured the USA before the Beatles did. They came here to Buffalo NY in the Spring on '64, while the Beatles were working on the "Hard Day's Night" movie. From what I heared, Dave was a very good businessman.
