Inxs

From Australia

Listed under : Pop Rock 1991-today

Orville Lee : One of Australia's most famous imports, the band was hugely popular in their homeland. They gained international fame with their 5th album 'Listen Like Thieves' on the strength of the single "What You Need".Inxs hit it huge internationally with 1987's Kick hitting over 10 million in sales, a sell out tour, and huge hit singles including "New Sensations (3# US), Devil Inside (top 5 US), Need You Tonight (#1 in the US), and Never Tear Us Apart(#7 US)". After a break the band reconvened in 1990 and recorded the follow up to Kick titled X. A solid album but inferior to its predecessor. The album contained hit singles "Suicide Blonde" and "Disappear" and successfull tour.

In 1991 the live album "Live Baby Live" is released as well as the home video capturing the bands tour stop at London's Wembley stadium. The band went back into the studio and completed 'Welcome to Wherever You Are' which contained minor hits "Heaven Sent, Taste it, Not Enough Time and Beautiful Girl".

Instead of touring in 1992 the band went back into the studio. In 1993 they finally began their world tour in support for "Welcome to Wherever You Are" playing smaller venues. By fall, they release "Full Moon, Dirty Hearts" making a video for each release. Continuing the trend, the album sells poorer than the previous release. A trend that has occurred since Kick.

By 1997, with a much needed boost, INXS released what was to be their last album "Elegantly Wasted" with the title track becoming a hit in Britain and Australia as well as getting airplay in the US. A tour commenced but tragedy struck on the 22nd of November when Michael Hutchence is found dead in his hotel room in Sydney of an apparent suicide. INXS is no more.In 1999, the remaining band members reunite with one hit wonder Terence Trent Darby to open the new Olympic stadium in Australia. In 2000 the band recruited friend Jon Stevens for a couple of gigs performing INXS material. Over the next 2 years INXS with Jon Stevens toured Australia, US, South America, and Britain. They also played festivals in Europe, played The Goodwill Games, and composed new songs together with Jon Stevens.

By 2003, the band toured sporadically with Stevens leaving the band but the band still remains together focusing on various projects and releasing INXS back catalogues and compilations.
