Kinks

From England

Listed under : Mersey Sound

By The Kinks

What can be said for a band that has had many top 10 hits, countless top 40s all over the world, and millions of record sales worldwide? Well, I can say that many of today's generation do not know about The Kinks, one of the most influential bands of all time. Although not as accepted as the Beatles or as experimental as the Stones, the Kinks bred a very ingenous and, in my opinion, perfect style of music : humurous and ingenous vocals, simple beats and rthyms, and guitar solos mixed with crunching chords and soft acoustics and pianos. But the Kinks cannot be limited to a few instruments, as their legendry rock operas show, sometimes combining up to 15 band members, instead of the regular 4 piece that The Kinks originally began with. Ray Davies, the elder of the Davies bros, acted as band leader, as he wrote the music, produced many of the later albums, and sang songs, all while playing guitar, piano, or other instruments. Dave Davies, the younger brother showed immense musical talent at a young age, as can be seen in his solo in the Kinks first hit "You Really Got Me". Dave's sometimes uncontrolled and sporadic guitar solos matched the solos given to the various drummers over the years, mainly Mick Avory. Although their bass style was not revolutionary, it was completely solid and added a very intelligent blues feel to many of The Kinks songs. Peter Quaife, the main bassist of the group, had started out playing guitar, but switched to the bass guitar when he joined brothers Ray and Dave.

The Kinks were driven by a love-hate relationship between Ray and Dave, as it has been said that Ray stabbed Dave with a fork, just because Dave was trying to grab a chip.

I believe, and please, this is my opinion, that The Kinks were the most talented rock band of the 60's, even more so than the Beatles or the Who. The writing is pure genious while the music is so solid, snobby, melodic, crisp, and uncontrolled that it still blows my mind. I suggest to anyone to check out some Kinks albums, below are my favorites. And remember, always play music, always have fun!

  • You Really Got Me (1965)
  • The Kink Kontroversy (1965)
  • Lola vs. the Powerman & the Money-Go-Round (1970)
-- This is my favorite Kinks album. The songwriting is unparrelled.
  • The Kinks Present Schoolboys in Disgrace (1975)

Go check some of these out, and have fun.
