Oasis

From UK

Listed under : Rock 1991-1999

Oasis... Love them or hate them. For me they are one of the best definitons of what is Rock music. Fun, varied, suprising and cheeky. The slight touch of rough guitar, wild vocals, big drums and thumping bass, keeps them attached to the orignal sound.

The 60's influence is very dominant, which is nothing to be ashamed of. It will be very interesting to see what happens with the group in future years.

Ben O'Brien: Oasis kind of define '90s rock'n'roll. You can see on their anniversary dvd addition of definitely maybe on the documentary an early interview with Noel stating how successful the band were going to become and that their music would stand the test of time, well it has, sure they've got some strong influences and some pinched guitar riffs(courtesy of Noel). Oasis were dominant in the mid '90s, how many bands can you say were the biggest band in the world for a period of time, not many. Noel openly additted that when recording 'Be Here Now' that was when all the money for 'Morning Glory' started rolling in, and it had a negative affect on the group.

An interesting fact about Oasis is most of the songs on the first three albums were written by Noel before they recorded 'Definitely Maybe', also on the dvd addition the band can be seen rehersing 'All around the world' which wasn't recorded until 'Be Here Now'

Sam : The British music scene was boring in the early 90's, there weren't many actual bands around just Dance DJ's and Hip Hop artists, the only decent rock music was coming from America with Nirvana and REM etc.

The only British band that was any good: The Stone Roses, and they were going downhill. So a band named Oasis formed, at first they were only performing at a place called the Boardwalk until Alan McGee saw them and signed them to his record label, Creation.

The first album was 1994's Definitely Maybe, now known as the greatest debut album ever and the most important British album of the 90's. The songs were just straight forward Punk Rock songs and the band were just a bunch of normal lads who enjoy football, getting drunk and taking drugs. At the time most bands were squeaky clean boybands who young girls loved so when Oasis came along it was good to see normal people making normal music. When the second album, 1995's (What's The Story) Morning Glory, was released the sales went through the roof and it eventually became the highest selling album in Britain ever.

With songs like Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger Oasis became a household name. In the summer of 96 they did a gig at Knebworth and it became the biggest gig ever. Then it all went wrong, third album, 1997's Be Here Now didn't go down well with some of the fans and the reviewers, people were saying that they got lost in their own success, it's probably best to forget about it.

Since then they have not really lived up to the first two albums and it has all gone downhill but they will still be remembered for saving British music.
