PoliceFrom England Listed under : Pop Rock 1981-1990 From Fallout to Sting's own Russians. The group had a spetacular career, beginning in the Punk movement with four members in the band. Orville Lee : The Police cannot be classified. They emerged when punk rock was in full throttle in England but they were not punk? Were they new wave? Reggae? The Police were all of those and more with a lead singer with a penchant for jazz music, a guitarist originally of the British invasion, and an American drummer from IRS records (Copelands brother owned and ran IRS). They burst onto the scene in 1977, ditched their first guitarist, shored up a polished sound and released a debut album with a single about a woman named Roxanne. This would lead to huge tours, huge sales, and critical acclaim. By 1981, the cracks were starting to show and the once mighty threesome was beginning to drift apart. Not since The Beatles was the infighting so publicly harsh. Arguments, physical altercations erupted in the studio, backstage and even onstage. The band began to get involved with outside projects with Stewart Copeland scoring soundtracks, Andy Summers doing collaborations with Robert Fripp, and Sting doing movies and solo material. Amidst all the chaos The Police were able to release their greatest achievement, Synchronicity, which displayed Stings overall dominance of the band. By this time they were the biggest band in the world, released a number one record and a single which would go on to be the most famous recognized song of stalking in history (Every breath you take). They finished their tour in 1984 leaving the world hanging. They would reconvene two years later for the Conspiracy of Hope tour and a hits record but the magic was lost and the band soon parted ways. They have never officially broke up giving fans hope that a reunion is in the future.
