Stranglers

From UK

Listed under : Punk before 1976

Songs such as Grip, Peaches, Walk on by were of the highest level in music standards, the group seemed to go through many phases, with songs such as Golden Brown. A huge rock group providing many great albums and concerts. I think they would have made it big even if the Punk movement didn't exists, they were talented musicians and offered a unique style. The punk movement grabbed onto the Stranglers...

    Members
  • Hugh Cornwell - Guitar and Vocals
  • Jean Jacques Burnel Bass & Vocals
  • Dave Greenfield - Keyboards
  • Jet Black - Drums

Gram : Formed in 1974, gigged around London, supporting Patti Smith at the Roundhouse in 76.They had quite a following before the punk era burst onto London scene in 76. The Stranglers became one of the leading bands on that scene. Albums such as Rattus Norvegicus, Black and White and No More Heroes are all late 70's classics.
Faded musically in the mid eighties despite continuing hits.

Phil : The instrument skills of all the band members is easily appreciated on any one of the versions of the cover song Walk on by (composed by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Dionne Warwick, recorded in 1963). The Stranglers really display their talent with this song, taking turns and improvising in solos.

No More Heroes in 1977 to Golden Brown in 82. In between such classics as Grip, 5 Minutes, Peaches and Duchess, Something better change, Who wants the World.
