Accompanied by four childhood friends as his band the kid had one talent that could not be detected in promo pictures: he was a gifted songwriter and sang his lyrics as he lived them and lived his music as he wrote it. On ten short straightforward yet melodic songs, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers gave every rock 'n' roll fan a breath of fresh air, with shades of The Byrds' tangling 12-strings, Bo Diddley's "da-dada-dah" and Bob Dylan's social consciousness. For all its first album flaws, "Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers could not hide the glory and rewards that were to come from 1979's "Damn The Torpedoes" (arguably one of the most seminal rock albums of all time) to the mainstream (but non-compromising) success that still goes on to this present day.
