U2From Ireland Listed under : Rock Orville Lee : U2 is one band who is naive in the fact that they truly believe that music can make a difference for the better and they proved it can. No band has worn its heart on it sleeve with such passion as U2. Blasting out of the post punk scene they wrote strong youthful songs with religious themes of hope and faith expanding as they got older into more political themes. U2 has maintained their longevity with well crafted songs and a great live show. They exposed themselves on the worlds stage in 1985 on Live Aid showing that anthemic quality they still possess. They became the biggest band in the world with 1987s sadly beautiful album The Joshua Tree and Rocks Hottest Ticket on the cover of Time magazine. There has been some bumps in the road with the band accused of being pompous (Rattle and Hum movie and soundtrack) preachy, arrogant, and overzealous with over the top stage shows and albums(Popmart). They reinvented themselves with 1991s Achtung Baby incorporating industrial and electronic influences creating another masterpiece and arguably their best to date. Sometimes the irony and music of the 'new' U2 alienated fans but they still moved forward peaking with 1997's underrated but lackluster effort Pop.They came back with a safe, classic U2 record that mixed old and new with 2000s All that You Cant Leave Behind and returned to the top of the charts to save rock and roll all over again. The members of U2, especially St. Bono used fame for more meaningful purposes instead of the typical rock cliches. As Chris Martin of Coldplay explained, U2 do what they want regardless of what people say. They've taught me to be brave enough to be myself. Orville Lee : I saw U2's Pop Mart tour in 1997 and in my Hallucinogenic state I found myself witnessing what was to be a battle of oversized proportions. One side was my loyalty in a band that played out as a soundtrack during my youthful hey dey. The other was my feelings of dissapointment and isolation in the fact that my earnest heroes who pulled off the irony shtick not but 4 years prior were now succumbing to its tightening grip. Gone was the fun and the melodies of past albums, what was left was as some put it, U2's Spinal Tap moment. The battle was soon to be forgotten as my state of inebriation grew casually worse and the show was to be the last thing on my frazzled and shambolic brain.
