John Peel

John Peel was a radio DJ on BBC Radio One. I think that we can safely say that many bands and artists owe their fame to this guy. I think he was the first person to put on the air groups such as the Damned, Ramones and the Undertones. He did his best in allowing people to listen to an alternative music and gave a big boost to the Punk scene. His radio show was also appreciated for the "Peel Sessions", as he invited groups to record and then aired the tracks. Some of the sessions are available on albums with groups such as The Jam, The Banshees...

Another side of John Peel which I have always appreciated and never forgotten was his dedication in giving a chance to young groups. When I was a teenager and playing in a "garage band" in the small town of King's Lynn, England. He actually came to listen to one of our concerts (around 1980) which included 2 very unkown groups called "Nuclear Sockets" and "Stranger Still", plus he wrote a great article in the magazine "Sounds" about us. Respect...
